Web Server

Shiny New Linux ServerI bought this server to learn how to administrate a linux box (it's Red Hat, for now), and it has done it's job admirably. Currently it's running Apache, PHP, and MySQL, along with a few user applications. I've used it as an Appleshare server (to share files and MP3s with my girlfriend) as well as a nightly Sitescooper to feed my Palm reading addiction. In fact, you can grab the Chicago Reader Movie Showtimes in iSilo format, if you'd like.

Of course it runs mc.clintock.com, but it's also manybooks.net and map.mc.clintock.com.

This was my first parts-built PC. It's got a dual-processor ready motherboard (slot 370) which I'd intended to use with two 900Mhz Celeron processors. It turns out that if I'd done my homework I'd have known that Celeron's can't be used in a dual processor system without a very serious hardware hack. So for now it's a single 900Mhz processor until I get the $$ to buy two Pentium IIIs with 512k cache. Plus I've got a 900 Mhz Celeron, new in box, that I'll sell cheap.

Bought a new hard drive (40Gig), and CD drive (generic), and a 256MB SDRAM module. yay. Installed without too much hassle, but I forgot to buy the heatsink first time around. Just followed the instructions in the motherboard manual, and everything fit fine.

Scavenged the ethernet card and video card from the old server, and installed Red Hat 7.2, then 7.3. I'm holding off the installation of RH 8.0 because of upgrade issues with Apache 2.0 and general weirdness when I've run 8.0 on test machines at work.

Update - I've installed Red Hat 9.0 and it's fantastic. Apache 2.0.40 has some nice refinements, and the upgrade process wasn't as bad as I'd feared.
