Stamp Press

OK, so it isn't the worst press in the world, but it's pretty dull - one moving part. Yay. It's cast iron, which helps, and it's got some detailing, but even the most desperate kid would have found this stultifying after stamping a couple of pieces of paper.

Rob Hann found a press identical to this one which cam with an instruction manual - Rob notes:

This press is actually either a Baltimore No. 80 or Baltimore No. 81 (the instruction booklet lists both models). It is manufactured by Baumgarten & Co., and is called a "Baltimore" Printing Press.

As listed in the description: "Our aim has been to construct a printing press that is so simple that any child who can read can operate the same. There are no complicated mechanical parts to puzzle the young mind, no springs to get out of order, or elaborate instructions to follow. The press will print cards, envelopes, tags, etc., and the ease with which an apparent difficult feat can be accomplished creates a mixture of joy, wonder and satisfaction in the operator."

It also gives instructions on how to operate the printing press and illustrations of the different parts which include:

  1. Base
  2. Ink Pad
  3. Printing Surface
  4. Handle
  5. Platen
  6. Yoke
  7. Type Holder
  8. Holder Button

Thanks Rob!
