Old Server

This is the sad old 266Mhz Celeron I used to familiarize myself with BeOS 4.5 and Red Hat Linux 5.2 -- it served me well as a test server and as a gaming machine (my roommate Jay Doering played a lot of Quake once a good video card had been installed), but now it's just sort of sad. Plus the case sucks.

The beating this website took way back in July of 2002 gave me just the excuse I needed to get a new server and have the experience of building a PC from scratch, so this box was retired. I've been keeping it in the old study as a safe test environment, and I'm glad I did: Red Hat 8.0 freaked out twice during installation, and BeOS 5.0 was kind of messy too.

This computer was well worth the whopping $400 I paid for it -- $300 for the computer and $100 for the video card, a second ethernet card and a little RAM. Seven years of constant use, and I learned more than I could have in a class!

Update - I've brought this box back from the dead with Debian. The install went well, thanks to my Speakeasy SDSL, but the machine is still hampered by it's dinky hard drive.
